The Power to Heal

Dr. Bernie Siegel, M.D. author of the bestseller LOVE, MEDICINE AND MIRACLES and PEACE, LOVE, AND HEALING,has been on the NY Times Best Sellers List for years.

Dr Siegel’s main ingredient is to return people to their own self-healing capacity, “an ability given to us by our creator.” He focuses on the “mind-body connection which is bounded by the nervous system and its messenger molecules.”

He asks people to embrace life, rather than avoiding death, and in so doing free the energy locked in fear. Recognizing that within every human being lives the greatest drugstore in the world with all the wonder drugs imaginable, he advocates teaching people to use their innate ability to produce those chemicals.

Dr. Siegel sees the challenge of illness as an opportunity for growth and transformation.

Finally, he urges the medical community to turn its attention away from disease and death toward health and life.

The popularity of his books and his frequent appearances on talk shows indicates the public endorsement of his perspective on healing.

This is a great boost to chiropractic as Dr. Bernie Siegel, M.D. ‘s very philosophy of life and health stems from the chiropractic philosophy.
For years Dr. Siegel was a student of Bill Bane, D.C. a member of the Emissary of Light and a prominent Chiropractor from New Hampshire.

For over 100 years chiropractic emphasized tapping into the innate ability of the body to heal itself.
Chiropractic practice is designed to clear blockages, called subluxations, to the nervous system , the medium that interweaves the body and mind. Chiropractic promotes and supports life and health rather than treats and suppresses symptoms and disease.

At the heart of the practice of chiropractic is the teaching of its philosophy of life, health, healing and wellbeing.

Today, 100 years later, sick people are turning to self-healing, re-learning to trust their bodies and to have faith in the power that creates. Since this approach brings great results in the sick, why wait until we are sick to apply it? Why not keep ourselves well by learning to trust our Innate Intelligence now and making the shift today?

Do we have to wait until our children grow up to be diagnosed with a dreadful disease to turn them on to life and proper living?

This is the stand that chiropractic makes: Freeing life and promoting well-being throughout life. That is what true health care is, in opposition to sickness and disease care.

The shift from crisis, symptomatic care to proactive well-being care is becoming an economic necessity. The gain and reward is a richer more vibrant and abundant life.
As the old adage states: “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

Feeling Edgy?

Stress seems to be the modern villain today. No matter where you turn, which newspaper you read or which talk show you watch, stress appears to be the cause of every ailment from heart attack to stroke, colitis to cancer, headache to anorexia, etc.

It is interesting that no one ever tells you what stress is! We have made stress out to be some intangible, esoteric, invisible aggressor that wreaks havoc with our bodies.

Stress, however, has very real physiological manifestations: First, the tension of the nervous system increases as the meninges contract pulling the spinal cord, causing the cord to rise up to two inches into the skull. This is witnessed by a corresponding stooped position, head forward, shoulders and back “up” posture.

We might say that things are “getting on our nerves,” that we have “our back up against the wall” or have “stretched ourselves to the limit,” or that we are “uptight” or “high-strung.”

From increased nerve tension, nerve fire into muscles causing a tightening of the musculature everywhere.
This is experienced as tension, especially in the back of the neck, shoulders and lower back. Instinctively, people will grab their necks with one hand while saying, ”I am stressed out” or reach for their lower backs with both hands while stretching backwards acknowledging that they have a had a tough day.

This muscular response caused by nerve tension also takes place in the internal organs that are mostly lined with muscle. It may lead to shortness of breath, spastic colon, palpitation, stomach pain and other symptomatologies. It also causes a cascade of chemical responses through out the body and immune system because we have become sympathetic dominant. This means our nerve system is predominently in ‘fight-flight’ mode.

The purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is to release stress stored in the nervous system and in the spinal system.
Due to the relaxation response experienced after an adjustment, a myriad of symptoms and problems may be alleviated through self-healing, the natural ability of the body to heal itself.

In addition, a nervous system cleared regularly of stress is more flexible and adaptable. This allows us to take on new stresses as a positive challenge rather than an overburden. It is the difference between being indebt verses earning interest!”

Anyone truly interested in improving the quality of their lives should join the millions that have already experienced the positive effects of regular chiropractic care.

Health Care: Is It A Lie?

When exploring the topic of health, we must first recognize that what we call “health care” is in reality sickness and disease care.
When was the last time you walked into a hospital, a medical center or a doctor’s office and said, “Doc, I feel radiant and terrific, is there anything you can do to keep me that way? Of course this does not happen because you must have a symptom, a sickness, or a disease to utilize the so-called “health care delivery system.”

Medicine, supported by the pharmaceutical companies, constitutes the so-called “health care system.” Without placing a judgment on it we must recognize it for what it is: a sickness and disease management industry. Everything in the study of medicine focuses on symptoms, sickness, disease, pathology, and morbidity.

But what about preventive medicine one may ask? Isn’t preventive medicine a form of health care? No, not really!
The sole purpose of preventive medicine is the early detection of pathologies. The intent is to have early diagnosis, apply early treatment and hope for a better prognosis or chance of recovery.

So in reality preventive medicine is still a form of sickness and disease care by seeking early detection.

So we see that what we call “health care” is in actuality “sickness and disease care.”

There is however, apart from medicine, a true positive health care delivery system. A health care system you do not have to be sick to utilize. A health care system that truly potentializes your own individual capacity for wellbeing.

That system encompasses a growing number of professions and disciplines spearheaded by Chiropractic. Chiropractic is not the only one, but it is certainly the first profession to focus on health rather than sickness; it is also the largest drugless health profession in the world today.

In conclusion, Health care is the care we seek while well, while in a state of health so as to ensure continuous well being.

Isn’t it time we change our approach to health and take care of our health while we have it? That’s health care!

Try Chiropractic for the health of it!

Health is Our Greatest Wealth

There is no greater wealth than our own health and the health of society.

The proof and validity of this statement need no scientific documentation, nor elaborate research. It is said that one who proves things by experience increases knowledge. We need to look no further than the worldwide human experience, to know the truth and reality that health is our greatest wealth and asset.

The instant we loose our health, there is nearly nothing we would not do to retrieve it.

We will travel any distances, spend any amount of time, money and energy if only we can have a glimmer of hope of regaining our precious health. We may even submit ourselves to the most bizarre and “out on a limb” treatments, if a potential resolution is hoped for.

Re-mortgaging our home, going into debt and even bankruptcy is no longer a problem when our health is at stake.

When we loose our health, our priorities suddenly change: baseball games, parent-teachers conferences, church meetings, hobbies and other endeavors seem to fade in the background at a fast rate. Even caring for our children or nurturing our relationships become difficult and challenging when our health has slipped away.

The things that we may have cherished the most seem to no longer matter. Values and priorities are frequently turned upside down.

So, in the light of all this, doesn’t it make sense to make our health our number one priority, no matter what, because indeed it is our greatest wealth.

Why is this lesson in life so difficult to learn? It may be because we take our health for granted. It may also be due to lack of education. Educating a society about health is the one of the most potent factor in improving the health of a nation.

The day we make our health our top priority, by honoring and respecting our body, by trusting the inherent inborn power of the body to heal and by understanding that symptoms are part of the language of the innate wisdom of life, we begin to invest in our greatest wealth and asset.

Investments are small yet returns are invaluable.

Insuring a free flow of life energy, a proper transfer of information between brain cells and tissue cells and a freedom of motion of the spine through regular chiropractic check-ups and adjustment is a first step in investing in our health.

Many other aspects of the health equation from nutrition to exercises, meditation and bodywork are also essential. Each step taken to nurture and support our wellbeing is time, money and energy well invested in creating vibrant health and vitality which is our greatest wealth.
Remember that once we loose our health, there is virtually nothing we wouldn’t do to retrieve it. So be proactive and invest in your health and wellbeing now.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Should I Go To A Chiropractor?

Many people wonder if they are in need of a spinal check-up by a chiropractor. Here is a little test you can give yourself to determine whether or not you should go to a chiropractor. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I alive?

  • Do I have a spine?

  • Do I have a nervous system?

If you answer “Yes” to these three questions, drop what you’re doing and call to make an apointment at your favorite D.C.

Throughout most of your life you’ve been getting various check-ups from different doctors, yet you’ve ignored your spinal health. Think about it: you can live without teeth, you can live without eyes, you can live without ears, gallbladder, apendix, kidneys, etc., BUT can you live without a spine? Never! Yet, why do we ignore spinal health?

The answer is obvious, we weren’t taught spinal health. That’s really surprising in light of the fact that, for thousands years, in many different cultures, the health of the spine was considered essential to the health of the body in general. The ancient Chinese and Japanese were quite aware of the spine; they developed the art of back walking for ill people, and as a general tune-up.
The Indians developed Yoga exercises. Among African tribes, European tribes, and many others indigenous tribes, you find spinal health considered one of the most important aspects of over all health.

However, within the last 300 years, spinal  “awareness” has waned considerable. And, when chemical medicine, which is now dominant in this society, came on the scene, spinal health was all but forgotten.

This is quite ironic considering what Hippocrites, the so-called Father of Medicine said: “Look well to the spine for the cause of diseases.”

Hippocrites, who stressed proper diet, exercise, rest, spinal adjustments and other “natural cures,” realized that true health could only be achieved by bringing these many factors into play in order to achieve balance of the whole person. That is true “holistic” health. And total health requires that the spine be given utmost consideration.

Bring your whole family for chiropractic spinal check-ups, and see a beautiful improvement in everyone’s well being. See your family with higher resistance to disease, more energy, less health problems, and most important of all, a DRUGLESS, NATURAL approach to health and healing.

The Jamie Clark Story

Here is the Jamie Clark story. It demonstrates the positive impact of chiropractic on the physiology of children. Keep in mind that this story is taken from a mostly wellness chiropractic office, seeing an average of over 140 children per week regularly. Since most of them were asymptomatic to start with, there is only a small pool to draw from that was symptomatic. Jamie Clark is the most profound of these stories.

Jamie Clark was born February 15, 1993 via modern technological obstetrical procedures.

She was a C-section baby during which she was in fetal distress. Vacuum extraction was used to pull her out of the lower abdominal incision.

The suction cup left Jamie’s face black and blue from the crown of the head to the eyebrows. Within three weeks the discoloration disappeared but a large cephalo-hematoma remained. Jamie was sent to St. Mary’s Hospital in Langhorne, PA for skull X-rays that revealed a calcified hematoma.

Her own body dissolved the calcification within a period of four months.

On April 19, 1993 Jamie was taken to a pediatrician for a check-up. She received the DPT and oral Polio vaccines.

Within three weeks Jamie developed an ear infection, which was treated with Amoxicillin to no avail.

A week later Ceclor, another antibiotic, was prescribed. Jamie started vomiting excessively, refused bottles, became restless and only slept in two to three hours intervals.

She developed diarrhea, kicked and stiffen her body and cried constantly.

In early June 1993, Jamie was referred to Philadelphia Children’s Hospital. Baby formula was changed to Nutramigen, a predigested hypoallergic formula. Every 48 hours stool hemacultures revealed blood in her feces.

On June 18, 1993 Jamie was given a barium uppergastrointestinal tract examination. The result was negative with no evidence of esophageal reflux. Blood and stool specimens were taken. Blood was still present in the feces.

The gastroenterological diagnosis is:

Post-viral enteritis, C-difficile enteritis, colitis secondary to antibiotic usage, allergic colitis, gastresophageal reflux with esophagitis, gastric and/or duodenal ulcer disease, duodenitis secondary to congenital or autoimmune phenomena.

On June 22, 1993 Jamie received Demerol and Versed by intravenous injection and preparation fro an upper endoscopy where a tube in inserted into the mouth through the esophagus, through the stomach and into the duodenum.

Biopsies were taken from the duodenum, the antrum of the stomach and the esophagus. Results revealed duodenitis and esophagitis.

Zantac and Reglan were prescribed.

On July 9, 1993, a gastric emptying study or milk scan was performed by mixin baby formula with Technetium and Sulfur Colloid. The results showed no definite evidence of reflux into the upper esophageus but a marked delay in initial rate of stomach emptying. It suggested an antral grinding dysfunction.

On July 15, 1993 at a follow up visit with the pediatrician, DPT, oral Polio and HIP shots were administered. Since ear infection was still present, SMZ-TMP antibiotic was administered. Due to Jamie’s apparent clubfeet, she was referred to an orthopedist surgeon for examination.

On July 19, 1993, the ear infection has progressed into both ears. The pediatrician prescribes Lorabid suspension and another regimen of antibiotics.

On July 21, 1993, the ear infection has worsened and Erythromicin is prescribed with the recommendation of inner ear tubes insertion.

On July 29, 1993, the ear infection finally clears. The pediatrician suggested Amoxicillin as a prophylactic antibiotic therapy. The parent refused.

On July 30, 1993, the orthopedic surgeon recommended tearing of Jamie’s feet ligaments, corrective casts and possible Fillhauer bars with corrective shoes to deal with Jamie’s club feet.

Jamie, now five and an half months old, was taking antibiotics three times a day, Zantac twice a day, Reglan four times a day, Tylenol and Ambesol. She had become chemically toxic and was facing orthopedic surgery.

On August 4, 1993, I saw Jamie Clark for the first time. Her parents reported that she was very irritable, vomited frequently, slept sporadically and had stomach pain. She was very thin, pale and lifeless.

I held a gentle contact on her left occiput, a double notch contact on her sacrum, adjusted Jamie’s right temporal suture and her Atlas vertebrae.

Since I could not tell the parents to take her off all the medications, because it is the practice of medicine, I stated that, if she were my baby, I would take her off every drugs.

On August 6, 1993, Jamie returned to my office a very happy infant. She slept better, ate well and had no stomach pain. I adjusted her again and placed her on a three times a week chiropractic care schedule.

The parents asked: “what about the bow legs and club feet?” I explained that all I could do was to clear the nerve system of interferences caused by subluxations, the rest was up to Jamie’s innate ability to heal.

I also explained that I monitor heel tension, foot flare, leg length, leg adduction, ankle flare, microwave emission and muscle tone as a mean of analysis of her neuro-spinal system. I usually notice a reduction of these variables after adjustments. This means that in most people, alignment of the legs, ankles and feet shift as a result of spinal adjustments.

Every visit thereafter, Jamie improved dramatically. I noticed that her legs and feet were turning toward “normal”.

A follow-up visit to the Bucks County Orthopedic Group confirmed that the hips were normal, the knees were normal and the feet still had a mild metatarsus adductus deformity, which should resolve spontaneously.

It is my firm conviction that Jamie’s clubfeet and bowlegs were caused by excessive spinal cord tension due to subluxations produced by a traumatic birth. Her situation was further complicated by chemical overload from medications and by physical stress from the numerous medical procedures.

By the time I left practice in 1997, Jamie was coming in for wellbeing care on a regular basis along with her parents. She was a completely normal baby, happy, healthy and walking like any other child of her age.

I wonder what would have happened to Jamie if she had continued down the medical interventions road.

What would have happened if I had refused to see her because she did not have back pain or any apparent neuromuscular problem?

What would have happened if the neighbors, that referred her to my office, believed that chiropractic is for bad back? Would they have talked to Jamie’s parents pleading them to send her to a chiropractor?

What would have happened if I had played doctor, requested all her medical records, taking X-Rays, performing orthopedic, neurological exams prior to adjusting her?

Wouldn’t have I duplicated the very approached that failed to get her well?

Would her parents have allowed it after all they had seen their baby go through?

Would they have thought, what a fool I was to attempt to compete and duplicate the very best medical care a child can get at Philadelphia Children’s Hospital?

Instead I acted in the now moment. My heart was wide open in hearing the plight and suffering of this infant. I acted out of the goodness in my heart, in total trust that within that sick body was trapped a healthy joyful infant. I used my intuition and instinct, letting my senses give me a full reading of Jamie’s subluxation patter.

Instead of addressing the darkness and what was wrong with her, I turned on the light and address what was right in her.

To me Chiropractic is not an alternative for medicine. Chiropractic stands on its own and everyone can enjoy its benefit whether sick or well. Medicine is about sickness and disease. Chiropractic is about life.

Vacation Backlash

It is unfortunate that during long vacation weekends so many auto accidents occur; but it is a reality and we have to face it openly. Usually associated with car crashes is a trauma called “whiplash.”

Whiplash is the name given to an injury in which there is a hyperextension and hyperflexion of the neck. As a result of this forceful bending of the cervical spine backward and forward, changes in the structural alignment occur. Many injuries of this nature are not felt immediately by the person involved; it may take many hours, months or even years before pathological symptoms appear. Usually the first “healing” symptoms are stiffness, tenderness, pain or soreness of the neck muscles along with edema or swelling and inflammation. This is a perfectly normal reaction to such physical trauma: the stiff muscles provide a “physiological cast” that locks the neck in position. This prevents further damage, and allows healing to take place.

The edema is caused by interstitial fluids and lymphatic fluids that have rushed to the damaged area to provide protection with immune cells. The swelling dilutes the toxicity of the chemicals released by the torn tissues. Any attempt to reduce swelling with ice will actually work against the body and leads to long range joint problem. The inflammation creates heat, which is necessary to speed up chemical reactions, and renders the pharmacopeias of the body more effective. The heat created, sometimes accompanied by fever, inhibit the reproduction of bateria that have flocked to munch on the damage tissues, thus keeping their population under control.

It is unfortunate that people are being prescribed muscle relaxant, anti-inflammatory and pain killer which allows them to move their neck around painlessly, leading them to work against their own body’s healing process. Immobility being a necessity for the repair of torn tissues in the early part of the healing process.

The irony is that after being prescribed those drugs, they also are being given a neck brace. The body had provided them with a natural one from the inside out free of charge! The lack of understanding and knowledge that most people have about whiplash leads to dire effects. People ignore the fact that undetected damage to the nerve system, called subluxation, due to displaced vertebrae, is usually associated with such trauma. Unless corrected, this leads months or years later to many disorders. Ranging from migraine headaches, visual disturbances, restricted movement, hearing loss, dizziness, neuralgia, and pain in the arm and shoulder, to asthma and respiratory problems. Prompt attention to this type of trauma can help avoid many symptoms, which often develop at a later date.

Chiropractic is particularly concerned with the structural and functional balance of the spine and the integrity of the nerve system. Should you become involved in an accident or fall in which you suspect that your spine has received traumatic forces, seek to get checked and adjusted.

Through “reading”, feeling and honoring your body responses Chiropractic will clear the subluxations caused by such trauma at the appropriate time.
Areas that are not yet ready or available for an adjustment will be left alone, while others will be addressed. Over time the impact of the trauma can be fully released preventing harmful effects.

There is always more than meet the eyes in a whiplash or fall. Such structural trauma to the neuro-spinal system is frequently the cause of pathologies latter on in life. Think of it in those terms; when was the last time you “banged” your stomach, pancreas, kidneys or liver verse the last time you “banged” your skeletal frame? The frame protects the nerve system and internal organs. In health and in sickness it is the first thing that needs to be addressed. Hippocrates the father of Medicine stated thousands of years ago: “In the care of human health, first look to the spine.” The neuro-spinal system is the “health keyboard” of the human body. A well functioning, supple, flexible spine free of blockages called subluxations insures the potential for a healthy life.

Healthy does not necessarily equate to being free of symptoms, as many symptoms are actually healing symptoms, adaptive symptoms to changes in the internal or external environment, messages to make changes in our lifestyle, or cleansing symptoms. Healthy means having the best capacity to adapt and function properly.

Healthy means being perceptive and aware of the inner messages given to us by our body and responding to them by honoring ourselves. The human spine being “married” to the brain stem, spinal cord and spinal nerves is the most essential system of the body. Proper alignment and function of the spine is paramount to one’s health and well being.

The Casual War

As a society we have been at war for the last 70 years or more. It is a hidden and insidious conflict, with yearly mass civilians casualties, injuries and permanent disabilities. Professionals are perpetuating involuntary mass murder yearly in the US, and no one wants to talk about it. This silent war is being wage on the human body by the pharmaceutical-medical complex and its prescribers.

Reportedly, over 800.000 thousands people die every year in the US from medical errors or medications side effects. The perpetrators have become so bold that they now advertise and market their wares on television around the clock. The public has become dull by years of programming. It is so brainwashed that the drug industry can spell out that, this or that drug can causes liver damage, renal failure, dizziness, loss of coordination, cardiac arrest and even death and people are still willing to buy it and take it. Greed, corruption and profit, entangled with economic imperatives, are at the root of this devastating war.

A war with no end in sight, as we keep going on “search and destroy” missions, doing “batteries” of tests, “attacking” the sickness, “waging war” on diseases, “bombarding” tumors, “eradicating” bacteria, “wiping out” viruses and “silencing” symptoms. The warmongers are at work and the casualties are mounting, as it is clear that this war cannot and will never be won. This approach to human health has failed and continues to fail.

The deep irony is that civilians, who are the main casualties of this war, are voluntarily financing the war! Donations are pouring in at groceries stores check out counters, hardware stores cash registers, at walk-a-thon, phone-a-thon, dance-a-thon, concerts, bake sales and other multitudes of diseases foundations’ fund raising events.

Over the last 30 years much has been done by many anti-war activists in raising the public awareness to no avail. Marylyn Fergusson, Harris L. Coultier, Deepak Chopra,M.D. Jeremy Rifkin, Robert Mendelsohn,M.D. Gary Null, Joseph Mercola,M.D. are amongst countless others who, along with Doctors for responsible medicine, the chiropractic and naturopathic professions have been asking for an end to this war while also providing an alternate peace path.

Today, things have come to a head and it is time to say ‘no more’. No more “Vietnam” on the human body. Today is a call for action, a call to arms. Not arms as weapons but arms as fingers to pound on the keyboard of the social media. Today is a call to all awakened and aware citizens to rise up and create a revolution that will unseat the pharmaceutical-medical cartel.

First, stop giving to disease, stop fueling the war and the very pharmaceutical-medical complex that is killing civilians by the hundredths thousands. Start giving to organizations, educational institutions, professions that have a positive, life enhancing, physiologically positive service to offer. Professions such as chiropractic, naturopathy, osteopathy, acupuncture, shamanism, massage therapy, body work, herbalist and life coaching.
Join the revolution and evolution of the “health care system”. Get on the social media channels and become an ‘anti-war-pro-peace’ life activist. Sounds like a radical and fanatical statement, yet it is clear that we can no longer keep on the same course, if the wellbeing of humanity is our focus and priority.

The train we are on has not delivered the promised results. It has actually produced the opposite outcome. We have more diseases and sick people than ever before and there are more mass casualties than ever. Medically induced death is equivalent to six jumbo jets falling out of the sky every day.
And no one is in an uproar?

Preventative medicine does little to enhance human health. It just detects early pathologies so that an early treatment by drugs, surgery, radiation or chemo can be applied in the hope of a better prognosis or outcome. In many situations it detects “normal pathologies” at an early stage; pathologies that the body is entirely capable of reversing on its own. Yet, the patient is now injected with a dose of fear and medical interventions with their inherent risks of iatrogenic effects.

Fear alone creates a negative physiology, biochemistry, immune response and outcome. The law of energy placement has delivered. By placing our energy, resources, finances, research, professional and political power into sickness and disease we have manifested more of it.

Today, the “health care system” is progressively bankrupting western industrialized nations at a growing relentless pace. It is bankrupting individuals, families, small businesses and corporations. It has a devastating effect on society and humanity. Between 2000 and 2010 the US spend 16 trillions dollars on so called “health” care.

The revolution and evolution needed has become an inescapable reality. It is a must and part of evolution out of the darkness into the light.
It is clear that such upheaval, reform and reorganization will not come from the top down, the institutions in power or the corporations with vested interests. They will not stop the war from which they all profit greedily. It must come from a grassroots movement. Freedom is never given freely to the oppressed by the oppressor. The oppressed have to rage out of their condition to gain freedom. It must start with you and each individual. It must start by creating a demand at the bottom for a new approach to life, human health and well-being.

We are moving out of the age of darkness into the age of enlightenment. Every voice counts. Everyone can make a difference. As we all act and rebel against the pharmaceutical-medical cartel we are bound to hit the tipping point.

The Chiropractic profession has been and is at the forefront of this movement since it is the largest drugless healing profession in the world.

The Birth of Subluxation

Modern obstetrics may damage the baby’s neurospinal system. Chiropractors have a moral responsibility to tell the public about the potential damages caused by modern birth practices.

Every child needs chiropractic care, whether symptoms are present or not. All chiropractors must meet this challenge.

It is a widely held belief today that overwhelming and invasive physical, chemical, or emotional trauma are the major causes of vertebral subluxations.
However, there is one, inescapable event that is the primal cause of vertebral subluxations: Medical Technological Birth!

The birth process, as it is carried out today by modern obstetric, can cause neurological damage that can set the stage for the development of the vertebral subluxation complex. Let’s look at what happens during birth that can be impacting the spine and nervous system negatively.
Nature creates a whole human being in 280 days within a totally self-supporting biological system. But suddenly, the moment the baby is about to be born, many people assume nature doesn’t know what to do anymore. Therefore, they go to the “expert” who turns a natural feminine body function into an insensitive, brutal, mechanical extraction of a drugged and numbed out baby.

As a result of modern obstetrical procedures, unsuspected damage is inflicted on all aspects of the baby’s being, especially the vital neurospinal system.

What are the events that cause trauma to the neuro-spinal system? In the supine position, with her legs in stirrups, the woman is forced to work against gravity and to push the baby upwards. This position throws every muscle out of alignment for normal delivery – it’s the position animals adopt to signal surrender to a fight.

In the supine position, the uterus loaded with the fetus, the placenta, the amniotic sac and umbilical cord, presses downwards against major blood vessels which supply the organ of birth. As a result, the abdominal aorta, the inferior vena cava, and the iliac arteries and veins are compressed. This compression cuts the flow of the nutrient-waste product to the viscera, the uterus and pelvic muscles.

Expecting a woman to give birth under these circumstances is like asking a weight lifter to perform with a tourniquet strapped around his arms. The task becomes almost impossible, as muscles quickly become fatigued, spasms develop, and labor slows down, almost to a halt. In addition, administering drugs and anesthesia to the mother certainly interferes with labor by further weakening the voluntary expulsive efforts, thus prolonging labor or stopping it entirely. These potent drugs reach the baby’s body within 45 seconds; however the drug concentration that will affect a 140-180lbs woman on average, become dramtically overwhelming to a 7-12lbs infant.

Another factor involved with the woman lying flat on her back is the weight that the heavy abdomen places on three of the major plexuses of nerves that control the birthing system. The hypogastric, ovarian and sacral plexuses become temporarily compressed hindering delivery.

As a result of these factors, the baby finds himself trapped in the birth canal. Due to the extreme pressures that the walls of the uterus place on the fetus’ head, the oxygen to the brain is reduced. For every second that the baby’s cranial blood vessels are clamped down, there is anoxia to the brain, along with various degrees of brain damage.

Inherent in this scenario is the necessity for immediate intervention. Rushing in to extract the baby by means of forceps, vacuum extractor, manual delivery, or C-section are procedures which cause mild to severe damage to the neurospinal system. In an adult it takes a 90 degree rotation of the cervical spine to lock the neck and force the shoulders to pivot. Just visualize now an infant ready to be born, with a soft cartilaginous spine, trapped in the birth canal by the spastic muscles of the uterus. Now imagine someone going in with metal spoons or with a suction cup and pulling the neck of the baby, in what is called “traction-torsion of the cervical spine”, so as to cause the shoulders to pivot and align themselves with the long axis of the birth canal.

Next, imagine someone extracting the head and disengaging the shoulders from the grip of the uterus and vagina. To do this, the head of the baby must be rotated 180 degrees around, with the chin lined up with the spinous process of the seventh cervical, and the external occipital protuberance with the manubrium of the sternum.

The traction force being exerted is estimated to be between 90 and 140 pounds. This causes subluxations in nearly all hospital born babies. No further comment needs to be made, except to ask why any parent would be averse to having their child experience the gentle chiropractic adjustment? After all, the same parent consented to allow the child to experience the trauma of medical intervention at the most crucial moment of life itself – the beginning.

In essence, chiropractors have a moral responsibility to educate the public about the causes of subluxation, especially resulting from the frequently unnecessary and abusive practice of modern mechanical birth. We have a responsibility to open the doors, turn on the lights and help people to see that we can turn a faded health picture, a dimmed life expression into a vibrant, vivid portrait. The subluxation may have occurred at birth, but the chiropractic adjustments restore integrity to the spine, free the nervous system of interferences caused by subluxations and bring vitality to life.

Every child needs chiropractic care, whether symptoms are present or not, because correction of vertebral subluxation is necessary for the health of the biological system.

This is a challenge for all chiropractors to meet. Inherent to this challenge is a brand new beginning for the health of humanity.
